chapter 17

Hugging Samantha at the airport on Friday evening, Candace’s first words were of Bill. “I thought he might come with you.”

“Well, I like that! And how are you—and your mother—and Craig?” Samantha’s tone was joking, but it caught Candace’s attention.

“I’m sorry. I guess you can tell what my mind was on this whole flight. He hasn’t forgotten about me in a week, has he?”

“I can’t believe you have to ask that when he’s said he called you every day. And he’s at home right now cooking you a meal. The man talks of nothing but you; it’s disgusting.” They both laughed. “Can you stay awhile? On the phone yesterday, you said you were trying to get some vacation time.”

Candace shook her head. “I have to go back Monday. There’s a big international client we’re trying to land at a Wednesday meeting. But I assure you, that will not be on my mind until Tuesday.” She grabbed Samantha’s arm. “So, he’s talked of nothing but me? I want details.”

They spent the almost hour-long drive, from the Roanoke airport to Lexington, talking about Bill and Craig, and how they’d all spend the weekend together. “You’re Bill’s for tonight, but I want time with you tomorrow during the day. Bill will be at the shop, anyway.”

When they arrived at Bill’s apartment, Samantha helped her to the door with her luggage, rang the doorbell, then started for her car.

“Aren’t you coming in?”

“I don’t think I’d be appreciated just now. The mood will be broken if I’m in the way. I’ll see you in the morning.”

Candace smiled as Samantha drove away, then turned back to the door to find it open, and Bill standing there. She decided he couldn’t look more handsome.

“Well, orphans on the doorstep are gettin’ prettier every day,” he said, smiling as he picked up her suitcase and stood back so she could come in. As soon as he closed the door, he dropped the bag and pulled her to him. “This has been the longest week of my life, woman. What have you done to me?”

She immediately felt warm and comfortable in his arms. “That’s the best opening line I’ve ever heard. Are you sure you’ve got the right woman?”

“I hope so.” Her limbs weakened as their eyes met. Neither said anything, but the tension was obvious. “This is dangerous. Just standin’ this close to you, we might ignite—and then the dinner I’ve slaved over for two hours will be history!” She laughed as he made his way to the bar. “How about some wine? We’re having chicken, Italian style, so I chose a sweet white. Okay?”

“Sounds perfect.” She took the glass of wine he offered. “Dinner smells good; I’m starving.”

“Well, sit down. You don’t have long to wait.” He went into the kitchen. She kicked off her shoes and sank into the sofa. She looked around, once again admiring Bill’s tastes in antiques, colors, art, even his small library. When he came out of the kitchen a moment later, she watched him light the candles on the table.
