chapter 17
Hugging Samantha at the airport on Friday evening, Candaceâs first words were of Bill. âI thought he might come with you.â
âWell, I like that! And how are youâand your motherâand Craig?â Samanthaâs tone was joking, but it caught Candaceâs attention.
âIâm sorry. I guess you can tell what my mind was on this whole flight. He hasnât forgotten about me in a week, has he?â
âI canât believe you have to ask that when heâs said he called you every day. And heâs at home right now cooking you a meal. The man talks of nothing but you; itâs disgusting.â They both laughed. âCan you stay awhile? On the phone yesterday, you said you were trying to get some vacation time.â
Candace shook her head. âI have to go back Monday. Thereâs a big international client weâre trying to land at a Wednesday meeting. But I assure you, that will not be on my mind until Tuesday.â She grabbed Samanthaâs arm. âSo, heâs talked of nothing but me? I want details.â
They spent the almost hour-long drive, from the Roanoke airport to Lexington, talking about Bill and Craig, and how theyâd all spend the weekend together. âYouâre Billâs for tonight, but I want time with you tomorrow during the day. Bill will be at the shop, anyway.â
When they arrived at Billâs apartment, Samantha helped her to the door with her luggage, rang the doorbell, then started for her car.
âArenât you coming in?â
âI donât think Iâd be appreciated just now. The mood will be broken if Iâm in the way. Iâll see you in the morning.â
Candace smiled as Samantha drove away, then turned back to the door to find it open, and Bill standing there. She decided he couldnât look more handsome.
âWell, orphans on the doorstep are gettinâ prettier every day,â he said, smiling as he picked up her suitcase and stood back so she could come in. As soon as he closed the door, he dropped the bag and pulled her to him. âThis has been the longest week of my life, woman. What have you done to me?â
She immediately felt warm and comfortable in his arms. âThatâs the best opening line Iâve ever heard. Are you sure youâve got the right woman?â
âI hope so.â Her limbs weakened as their eyes met. Neither said anything, but the tension was obvious. âThis is dangerous. Just standinâ this close to you, we might igniteâand then the dinner Iâve slaved over for two hours will be history!â She laughed as he made his way to the bar. âHow about some wine? Weâre having chicken, Italian style, so I chose a sweet white. Okay?â
âSounds perfect.â She took the glass of wine he offered. âDinner smells good; Iâm starving.â
âWell, sit down. You donât have long to wait.â He went into the kitchen. She kicked off her shoes and sank into the sofa. She looked around, once again admiring Billâs tastes in antiques, colors, art, even his small library. When he came out of the kitchen a moment later, she watched him light the candles on the table.
